How to clean your stone tiles

Updated: Jun 19

Stone tiles have a timeless elegance and durability that make them a popular choice for flooring. Over time, however, stone tiles can lose their lustre and suffer from wear and tear due to foot traffic, spills, and exposure to the elements.

Here are some FAQs on how to maintain and safely clean your stone travertine, marble or granite floors:

Start with removing dirt and dust from your floors with a soft broom or a vacuum on a hard floor setting to avoid scratching your stone tiles. At least once a week use a soft mop head to wash over with clean, potable water. A dash of methylated spirits can be added as an antibacterial and to help minimise streaking or the need for drying on completion.

What cleaning products can I use?

Do not use Ajax, Jiff or other acidic or strong alkaline cleaning products. We recommend Lithofin Easy-Care everyday cleaner or Stone Soap.

What if I have difficult marks?

For removal of difficult marks, we recommend Lithofin Power-Clean. This is an aggressive yet non-acidic neutral cleaning agent. However, we recommend that this be applied by a professional.

Can I use a detergent?

If it is necessary to use a detergent it is important that it be a neutral product. Mild phosphate-free biodegradable liquid dish soaps are acceptable if rinsing is thorough on completion. We like to use Earth Choice Dishwashing Liquid.

How often should I reseal my tiles?

To keep your stone protected and looking their best, we recommend deep cleaning and resealing your tiles every 2 years, and every 1 year for high-traffic or outdoor areas. For deep scratches, you can call us to polish your floors and replace damaged tiles where necessary.
